How to Install Barn Doors

It is very important to install barn doors right the first time. You must make sure the doors are the proper size and installed correctly as they likely must house a lot of feed and equipment, and protect all contents from the elements. The following is a great way to install barn doors yourself and save money in the process:

  1. Amass all of your barn door hardware: goggles, level, tape measure, socket wrench, bolts, spacers, saw, drill, mounting board, paint, and the barn doors.
  2. Have a mounting board larger than the track and use the bolts and spacers to hold the track in place. If you choose to do so, you can paint the mounting board the same color as the door.
  3. Assemble the steel track with the joint brackets arranged according to your barn door specs. The width must be double the girth so the door can be opened completely. Next, drill the holes you need to put the steel track.
  4. Use a level and measure the track for alignment. Use the bolts to install the track and the spacers.
  5. According to your specific doors' instructions, install the bolts, washers, and nuts with a socket wrench. Next, attach the bottom roller guide so the door can be hung.

How to Safely Operate a Nail Gun

Nail guns are an absolute must for professional builders as well as those who like DIY projects. As advantageous as they are, there are some precautions that must be taken in order to ensure the handler's safety and the safety of those within close proximity. Read the owner's manual -- each model of gun is different. The following are some tips to use in addition to your specific manual:

  1. Always wear a safety shield on your face or glasses. This will protect your eyes from wayward nails that don't end up where they are supposed to.
  2. Use only new, clean construction nails as old ones can damage the gun and send rust out toward the operator
  3. If you are joining two pieces of wood, keep your hand the length of the fastener you are shooting away from at all times. Nails can drive through just about anything and can sometimes make a U-turn back toward the gun.
  4. When trying to place a fastener with accuracy, use your target and backdrop as if it were the bulls-eye when firing a gun. Keep all body parts out of the line of fire.
  5. Jams and misfires can be avoided with proper lubrication and maintenance of the nail gun on a regular basis.

A Swing for Your Deck or Porch

A swing on your porch or deck is not only a great way to relax outdoors, but it adds an element of class to the front of your house. If you follow the tips below, you will find that the installation process is easier than it appears:

  1. Install two hooks with the space between being the length of the swing. Be sure the height and width of the location you wish to place your swing will allow for crash-free swinging.
  2. Find a swing that does not require extensive assembly. When you open the box, take out the hardware nuts and bolts and set those off to the side. Find the instruction manual and place all of the parts on the ground in the way they will end up when assembly is complete. You may want to get a small bucket or cup to hold some of the smaller pieces.
  3. Follow the instruction manual carefully. You want to ensure the utmost safety standards when placing a swing on your property. This especially applies if you have small children around who play hard. Once you have completely hung the swing, test it by sitting in it to be sure it won't collapse once a person uses it.
